  • Description

RHODESIA HAS CHANGED OVER SMOOTHLY FROM THE OLD POUNDS, SHILLINGS AND PENCE TO A DECIMAL CURRENCY SYSTEM WITH DOLLARS AND CENTS. UNLIKE THE PREVIOUS CURRENCY, THE NEW DOLLAR NOTES AND CENT COINS DO NOT BEAR THE HEAD OF THE BRITISH SOVEREIGN.

THE COUNTRY'S BANK OPENED FOR BUSINESS AS USUAL AFTER BEING CLOSED FOR THREE DAYS, AND ISSUED THE NEW ONE, TWO, TEN AND 50 DOLLAR NOTES, PLUS THE NEW CENT PIECES WHICH WILL EVENTUALLY REPLACE THE OLD RHODESIAN PENNY.

SECRETARY OF THE RHODESIAN DECIMAL CURRENCY BOARD, MR. RICHARD HARLOE, SAID THE CHANGE-OVER WAS GOING SMOOTHLY. HE WAS, HOWEVER, DISAPPOINTED THAT SO MAY PEOPLE WERE TRYING TO CHANGE ALL THEIR OLD MONEY FOR NEW, AS IT WAS INTENDED TO REPLACE ALL THE OLD NOTES AND COINS GRADUALLY.

THE NEW DOLLAR WILL EQUAL THE PRESENT RHODESIAN TEN-SHILLING (11S 8D STERLING), AND IS DIVIDED INTO 100 CENTS. BOTH CURRENCIES WILL CIRCULATE FOR SOME TIME UNTIL THE CHANGE-OVER IS COMPLETE.

RHODESIA'S CHANGE-OVER IS BEING OBSERVED BY THE MALAWI DECIMAL CURRENCY BOARD; MALAWI IS GOING DECIMAL IN 12 MONTHS.
