  • Description

NINE NEW YORK COUPLES WERE MARRIED ON A HILLSIDE IN PROSPECT PARK BROOKLYN, A NEW YORK CITY ON SATURDAY (1 JULY) IN A CEREMONY THAT SOME CRITICS HAD CALLED "GROTESQUE, A PUBLICITY STUNT AND A TRAVESTY". SOME OF THE YOUNG COUPLES SEEMED TO ENJOY IT, BUT MANY OF THE BRIDE'S FATHERS DID NOT.

ONE BRIDE WAS BAREFOOT AND WORE ON HER BOSOM A BUTTON READING "MAKE LOVE, NOT WAR", HER HUSBAND-TO-BE HAD A BEARD AND LAUGHED ALOUD WHEN CRIMINAL COURT JUDGE AMOS BASEL, WHO WAS MARRYING EVERYONE, CAME TO THE PORTION OF THE CEREMONY WITH THE WORDS "FOR RICHER FOR POORER".

POLICE BARRICADES TO KEEP BACK THE CROWDS AT THE MASS WEDDING WERE FESTOONED WITH PAPER DAISIES.

ONE OF THE FIRST MAJOR PROBLEMS THE "WED-IN" HAD WAS THAT ONE OF THE COUPLES ARRIVED AN HOUR LATE. THE NEXT PROBLEM CAME WHEN ONE OF THE FATHERS WANDERED AWAY FROM THE BRIDAL PARTY.

THE JUDGE, WORRIED ABOUT MARRYING THE WRONG COUPLES, WAS MUTTERING "I HAVE TO HAVE A LIST, I HAVE TO HAVE A LIST". THE MAN WHO THOUGHT UP THE WHOLE IDEA, NEW YORK CITY PARKS COMMISSIONER AUGUST HECKSCHER, MOPPED HIS BROW IN THE 80 DEGREE (FAHRENHEIT) HEAT AND SAID "I'M MORE NERVOUS THAN THE BRIDES".

BY 2 P.M. THE PUNCH HAD RUN OUT, THE PARK WAS LITTERED WITH DEBRIS AND THE WEDDINGS HAD STILL NOT BEEN PERFORMED.

SHORTLY AFTERWARDS, THE ORCHESTRA (COWBELLS, DRUMS, A TROMBONE, TRUMPET, TWO VIOLINS, CYMBALS AND ORGAN) BEGAN TO PLAY "THERE'S PLENTY OF PROSPECTS IN PROSPECT PARK" AND THE BRIDAL PARTIES MARCHED PAST POLICE BARRICADES, PAST THEIR GUESTS, AND UP TO JUDGE BASEL.

AS THE JUDGE, WHO WAS TRAILING MICROPHONE CABLES FROM UNDER HIS ROBES, COMPLETED THE CEREMONY, WITH THE TRADITIONAL " I NOW PRONOUNCE YOU ALL HUSBANDS AND WIVES", ONE OF THE BRIDEGROOMS WAS ALREADY KISSING HIS BRIDE, AND MANY OTHERS INVOLVED IN THE WED-IN WERE BREATHING SIGNS OF RELIEF.
