France and the Soviet Union have signed a major trade deal including the Russian supply of natural gas and French construction of industrial plant in the Soviet Union.

The agreement was signed in Rambouillet, just outside Paris, on Friday (6 December) by French Prime Minister Valery Giscard d'Estaing and Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev.

The agreement was the first concrete result of two days intensive talks between the leaders which stressed the close political ties between their countries.

The economic co-operation pact is for five years and will double trade between the two countries during that period. Officials said after the ceremony it was the biggest such deal ever concluded between France and the Soviet Union.

The gas-supply agreement is for 20 years and involves the sale ??? France of 2,500 million cubic metros of natural gas a year, increasing this to 4,000 million cubic metros a year from 1980. Under the trade package, France will provide credits of 12,500 million francs (more than 1,000 million pounds sterling, 2,400 million US dollars) to the Soviet Union to finance the Russian purchase of major industrial plant.
