  • Description

An outsider, John Verese came through a big field to win the Benihana Powerboat race off Point Pleasant, New Jersey, USA, on Wednesday (16 July).

But Verese himself did little out-of-the ordinary to deserve victory in a starting field including last year's top powerboat racer Carlo Bonomi of Italy, and this year's current world championship leader, U.S. racer, Wally Franz.

It was a navigation error by field-leader Hal Salmann from Florida that handed first prize to Verese. Salmann led the first four leading boats off-course to miss a check-point. The penalties incurred by his mistake were enough to allow Varese's comparatively slow speed of 60 miles per hour (96.5 kilometres) over the 180 mile (290 kilometre) course to clinch him victory.

Verese piloted the largest boat in the race, a forty four foot Millar Seconde, and finished the race in three hours 14 minutes.
