LATEST NEWS OF THE CYPRUS SITUATION COMES FROM GENEVA, WHERE TODAY (THURSDAY) SOURCES CLOSE TO THE UNITED NATIONS MEDIATOR, MR. TUOMIOJA SAID THE ROAD AT LAST APPEARED OPEN FOR NEGOTIATIONS. IT WAS ANNOUNCED LAST NIGHT (WEDNESDAY) IN ATHENS, THAT A NOTE FROM THE GREEK PRIME MINISTER WILL BE HANDED TO THE TURKISH GOVERNMENT TODAY IN ANKARA. THE NOTE IS A REPLY TO THE PERSONAL APPEAL BY THE TURKISH PRIME MINISTER ON TUESDAY, FOR NEGOTIATIONS TO SOLVE THE CYPRUS DISPUTE.

YESTERDAY IN NICOSIA ITSELF, GREEK-CYPRIOT DEMONSTRATORS, MEMBERS OF THE RIGHT WING UNION OF GREEK FIGHTERS, MARCHED UP AND DOWN OUTSIDE THE AMERICAN EMBASSY. THEY CARRIED PLACARDS, MANY OF WHICH CLAIMED THAT THE UNITED STATES HAD A HAND IN THE WEEKEND 'BOMBING' RAIDS BY TURKISH JET PLANES ON GREEK-CYPRIOTS POSITIONS IN THE NORTHWEST OF THE ISLAND. OTHER PLACARDS SIN??? SAID: 'AMERICANS GO HOME' AND 'BRITISH GO HOME'. A SMALL DETACHMENT OF UNITED STATES MARINES ARRIVED AT THE EMBASSY BUT THERE WERE NO INCIDENTS, AND POLICE EVENTUALLY MOVED THE DEMONSTRATORS ON.
