  • Description

Police in Rio De Janeiro on Saturday (13 June) reconstructed the kidnapping of West German Ambassador Ehrenfried Von Holleben who is expected to be set free in the next two days in exchange for the release of 40 political prisoners in Brazil.

The kidnapping occurred on Thursday night (June 11) in a Rio de Janeiro street. The terrorists shot out a street light and a station wagon blocked the way of the security car driving ahead of the Ambassador's Mercedes. The security car, a Volkswagen, was machine gunned and one of the guards killed. Two other guards were seriously injured. The Ambassador's car was stopped and he was taken away by the kidnappers to an unknown hiding place. Police believe seven men and one woman carried out the kidnapping.

Despite a massive police hunt the West German ambassador has not yet been found and the Brazilian Government has agreed to the kidnappers' demand that 40 political prisoners be released and allowed to fly to Algiers. The Algerian Government has agreed to accept the released prisoners.

The ransom demand is the highest yet made for the life of a kidnapped diplomat since the rash of kidnappings started last year in Latin America.
