  • Description

The Kenya settler who threw down 'thirty pieces of silver' as Kenya European moderate Michael Blundell, leader of the multi-racial New Kenya Party, landed at Nairobi on return from London Kenya Conference says he will quit the farm he has cultivated for 25 years in the fertile White Highlands of Kinangop, Kenya. "There is no future for the European farmer," he told a Visnews cameramen filming the farm Mar 10. The farmer in british-born Major Jim Hughes.

Major Hughes, a typical settler symbolising the fears of many Europeans in Kenya, will sell the farm - once 500 acres of unworked bush country - and plans to begin a new life in South Africa. He is 65.

He came to the Kinangop area in 1925 with his wife, arriving in a small truck loaded with all their possessions. Then, those 500 acres, bought from the Government, were the haunt of the elephants, rhinoceros and the buffalo.

Hughes built a small house from wood cut from the forest, then began clearing the bush. Within a year, with the help of African employees, his first crop of pyrethrum was ready. With the passing years of back-breaking work, Hughes won recognition - and a medal - for the best-kept British Colonial farm.

Today he is to quit believing with his symbolic '30 pieces of silver' Europeans sin the New Kenya Party betrayed the white settlers at the London Conference on Kenya. Some Kenya Press reports indicate as many as 900 European farmers plan to quit as Kenya moves towards self-government with a preponderantly African Legislature.
