Background: Buddhists in South Vietnam have been celebrating the 2516th birthday of the prophet this weekend. Earlier in the month, militant Buddhists had asked all four delegations at the Paris peace talks for a uniform ceasefire in South Vietnam to mark the birthday celebrations. Last year a 24-hour ceasefire was called. But this time there was no respite from they fighting.
Nevertheless, in Saigon the theme of peace dominated the birthday ceremonials. Many of the faithful presented gifts of white doves to monks; others were dove labels. And in the capital, at least, there were no incidents to mar the celebrations.
