  • Description

A chapter in the history of Johannesburg's public transport ended after 70 years, on Mar. 18, when crowds cheered the city's last double-decker tram on its final journey through the streets. The electric tram, packed with a host of municipal dignitaries, was preceded by a horse-drawn veteran of the type that plied the streets in 1891. Pretty girls in period dress added a touch of old-time authenticity to the nostalgic scene.

When the trams started in Johannesburg there were four miles of horse tramways. But nobody - not even the Tramways Department or the African Museum - is sure what the routes were. The first electric trams ran in 1906 and subsequently there were 11 miles of tram lines. Now, there is only one destination - the scrapyard.
