Background: At the Senayan Stadium in Jakarta on Friday, President Suharto of Indonesia arrived to attend the 25th anniversary of the formation of Indonesia's armed forces. The President, though a four-star army generals himself, was dressed in a civilian suit. He was accompanied by officials of the Defence Ministry.

Over 10,000 troops took part in the parade. Indonesia's armed forces were formed in 1945, soon after the country received its independence from Butch rule. Throughout its history, the armed forces were divided politically and ideologically.

In his address to the troops on Friday, President Suharto stressed the necessity for unity within the military ranks. He also called upon the armed forces to prepare for a buildup in the future as part of the entire nation's development.

A contingent of Indonesia troops is currently serving on the International Control Commission in South Vietnam.
