TRANSCRIPT (SEQ. 18): HUSTON: "I DIRECTED MARILYN IN HER FIRST ROLE OF ANY IMPORTANCE "THE ASPHALT JUNGLE" AND IN HER LAST PICTURE "THE MISFITS". A NUMBER OF THOSE WHO WERE CLOSE TO HER DURING THE MAKING OF THE "MISFITS" THOUGHT THAT IT WOULD BE ONLY A FEW SHORT YEARS BEFORE SHE DIED OR WENT INTO AN INSTITUTION. HER GREAT ENEMY WAS SLEEPLESSNESS. ONLY GOD KNOWS WHY SHE FEARED IT SO MUCH. PERHAPS IT WAS SIMPLY THAT NOT TO SLEEP MEANT LOOSING HER BEAUTY, BUT I'M INCLINED TO THINK THAT THERE WAS MORE TO IT THAN THAT. IN ANY CASE SHE FOUGHT HER ENEMY WITH SEDATIVES UNTIL SHE HAD ACHIEVED NOT ONLY THE SLEEP BUT INSENSIBILITY. THEN STIMULANTS WOULD BE EMPLOYED TO AWAKEN HER. THIS VICIOUS CIRCLE PLAYED SUCH HAVOC WITH HER BODY THAT SHE HAD TO BE HOSPITALIZED FOR TEN DAYS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PICTURE. AN OVERDOSE OF SLEEPING TABLETS HAS BECOME SYNONYMOUS WITH SUICIDE.

Background: IN THE EARLY HOURS OF AUG 5, TWO DOCTORS FOUND FILM ACTRESS MARILYN MONROE DEAD IN HER HOLLYWOOD HOME NEAR LOS ANGELES. SHE WAS LYING IN BED WITH THE TELEPHONE RECEIVER IN HER HAND AND ON HER BEDSIDE TABLE STOOD AN EMPTY BOTTLE THAT HAD CONTAINED ABOUT 50 SLEEPING PILLS. AT 36, MISS MONROE WAS KNOWN TO HER PUBLIC AS THE WORLD'S GREATEST SEX SYMBOL.

HER HOUSEKEEPER NOTICED THAT HER BEDROOM LIGHT WAS STILL ON IN THE EARLY HOURS OF THE MORNING AND THE DOOR LOCKED. SHE CALLED THE DOCTORS IN WHO HAD TO BREAK A WINDOW TO GET INTO THE ROOM. WHEN THE POLICE ARRIVED THEY DESCRIBED THE DEATH AS "APPARENT SUICIDE". LATER HER BODY WAS TAKEN TO THE WESTWOOD MORTUARY WRAPPED IN A BLUE SHEET.

AFTER AN UNHAPPY CHILDHOOD MISS MONROE BROKE INTO FILMS AFTER WORKING FOR SEVERAL YEARS AS A PHOTOGRAPHER'S MODEL. USUALLY SHE PLAYED THE PART OF THE DUMB BLONDE, BUT HER LATER FILMS GAVE HER MORE SCOPE TO SHOW HER TALENT AS AN ACTRESS. HER FILMS EARNED SEVENTY MILLION POUNDS AT BOX OFFICES THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. IN RECENT YEARS THE ACTRESS SPENT SOME TIME IN HOSPITALS FOR WHAT WAS DESCRIBED AS A "EMOTIONAL AND PHYSICAL EXHAUSTION".

MISS MONROE'S THIRD AND FINAL MARRIAGE TO AUTHOR ARTHUR MILLER ENDED IN JANUARY 1961. DURING THE FOUR YEARS THEY WERE TOGETHER MR. MILLER ACCOMPANIED HIS WIFE WHEN SHE WENT ON LOCATION TO FILM. THEY BOTH CAME TO BRITAIN WHEN MISS MONROE STARRED IN "THE PRINCE AND THE SHOWGIRL" WITH SIR LAURENCE OLIVIER. THIS WAS JUDGED BY MANY TO BE HER BEST FILM.

RECENTLY SHE WAS DISMISSED BY 20TH CENTURY-FOX FROM THE FILM "SOMETHING'S GOT TO GIVE". THE STUDIO SAID THAT SHE WAS FREQUENTLY ABSENT FROM THE SET AND CAUSED THEM EXPENSIVE DELAYS IN PRODUCTION. THE ACTRESS SAID HER ABSENCES WERE DUE TO ILLNESS.

DIRECTOR JOHN HUSTON, WHO STARTED MARILYN MONROE'S FILM CAREER, PAID THIS TRIBUTE TO HER DURING AN INTERVIEW IN LONDON AUGUST 5.
