  • Description

Canada's largest icebreaker - the 'John A. Macdonald' - was launched Nov. 1 at Lauzon, Quebec, by Mrs. Diefenbaker, wife of Premier John Diefenbaker. She was accompanied by Transport Minister, Mr. Hees.

Only Russia's 'Lenin' and the American Navy's icebreaker, 'Glacier', are bigger than Canada's new vessel.

The 'John A. Macdonald' cost ten-million dollars to build and is driven by triple propellers. She carries three helicopters and, under normal operating conditions, a complement of over a hundred people - including crew, officials and passengers.

The new icebreaker will probably be commissioned in June 1960, and join the Department of Transport's Arctic Fleet the following month.
