Background: While King Hussein of Jordan was in Aqaba City on Tuesday (15 January), waiting to meet Dr. Henry Kissinger, the United States Secretary of State, his wife, Queen Alia, was planting a tree to celebrate Arbor Day. The ceremony took place at the king Hussein Medical Centre is a new Army hospital in Amman.
King Hussein is the patron of the Arbor Day Festival, which was inaugurated to encourage the planting of trees in Jordan because of the ???enefits to agriculture that they provide. This year the Jordanian Ministry of Agriculture will plant two-and-a-half million saplings in a large barren area of the country.
Several senior Government officials accompanied Queen Alia at the tree planting ceremony. The ceremony was watched by groups of soldiers, scouts and nurses.
