  • Description

Polling booths throughout Britain opened at 0700 hrs this morning (10 October) as the nation's 40 million voters began to choose their next government. And among the early voters were the leaders of the three principal parties.

Mr. Harold Wilson, Labour Party leader and Mr. Edward Health, who leads the Conservatives, both voted in London. Mr. Jeremy Thorpe cast his vote in Devon, near his home in the West Country.

Elsewhere, some 40 million voters are choosing 635 Members of Parliament rom among a record number of 2,251 candidates. And they will not have to wait to find out the winners. First results are expected by midnight, with the bulk of the declarations coming before dawn tomorrow.

SYNOPSIS: Showing every sing on confidence that the result will justify public opinion poll forecasts of a big Labour win, Mr. Wilson cast his own vote in the Westminster constituency in London - a staunch conservative stronghold.

Then, he travelled to his own constituency to await the outcome.

Mr. Edward Heath, the Conservative leader, walked from his London home to the polling station. For him, the outcome is personally crusial. If the conservatives lose, his leadership will come under attack.

Early forecasts showed that there could be a large percentage turn-out by the voters, but the heaviest voting was expected during the evening.
