In Nairobi, the Ethiopian Ambassador to Kenya Mengiste Desta has claimed that his country's army has completely defeated the Somali forces and driven them from the disputed Ogaden Desert.
INTERIOR MV: Ethiopian Ambassador to Kenya Mengiste Desta makes statement to newsmen at embassy in Nairobi.
DESTA: "The victorious Ethiopian regular and militia??? forces through great sacrifices have succeeded in wiping out a large proportion of the Somalia invading forces, while the rest are fleeing in all directions being pursued by Ethiopian troops. Siad Barre therefore has nothing to withdraw because as I said earlier his troops are being chased out from Ethiopian land by our troops. Barre and his henchmen are fully responsible for the vast destruction of human lives, both Somali and Ethiopian, caused by his reckless adventurous war. There is no contradiction between the masses of Ethiopia and Somalia. Only the Somali rul??? clique has misled the people of Somalia. To establish lasting peace in the Horn of Africa, the following are necessary prerequisites;
A. - Withdrawal of each and every single Somali soldier from Ethiopian territory.
B. - Renunciation of all claims in the region.
C. - Recognition of international boundary.
D. - Non-interference in Ethiopian affairs. AND
E. - Compensation for damages caused by the war. All these are conditions that must of necessity be fulfilled by Somalia to end the war. When Ethiopian force are now repulsing the Somali aggressors and driving them out from Ethiopian territory, the call for ceasefire by some Western powers who kept tight-lipped when Ethiopia was victim of unprovoked naked aggression is not only hypocritical but meaningless and therefore unacceptable to Ethiopia. The question of Soviet and Cuban assistance to Ethiopia is purely and simply Ethiopia's internal affair by virtue of the fact that Ethiopia has sovereign right whom to ask for assistance to defend her territorial integrity, and hence cannot be subject to negotiations."
