Background: In the Isle of Man, motorcycle riders from all over the world are practising, for this year's TT events. The Isle of Man TT is a unique annual series of race held over a 33-mile road course which extends completely around the self-governing island and swells the population from 60,000 to about 250,000. It is regarded as one of the most dangerous motor-cycle circuits in the world. The island authorities, and the Auto-Cycle Union have done their best to attract top riders but the number of fatalities in recent years has deterred some. In fact, star riders prefer the greater safety of heavily-marshalled circuits to these open stretches of public road where the swiftest medical aid is by a patrolling helicopter service. Nevertheless, on June the fifth, the racing was to begin, with riders -- including some star names as Phil Read - pitting their skills against the torturous circuit. The week's events - which attracts support from leading sponsors and major manufacturers - will be mixed, ranging from the small c.c. classes to huge 'superbikes', and the spectacular side-car units.
