    President Anwar Sadat of Egypt and the Syrian head of state President Hafez Al-Assad have met in Cairo to discuss Soviet policy in the Middle East.

    President Assad arrived in Egypt without prior announcement on Sunday (July 9) after four days of talks with Soviet leaders.

    He was met at Cairo airport by President Sadat and the two Arab leaders went straight to the Kubbeh Palace to begin their talks.

    President Assad was accompanied by the Syrian prime minister, Abdel Rohman Khlefawi, his foreign affairs minister Abdel Halim Khaddam as well as other ministers and officials.

    President Sadat was supported in the talks by the Egyptian Deputy Premier for Production and Trade Doctor Aziz Sidqi.

    It was not know how long President Assad would stay in the Egyptian capital.

    SYNOPSIS: At the Kubbeh Palace in Cairo, President Sadat of Egypt and President Assad of Syria have met to discuss Soviet policy in the Middle East.

    Attended by high-ranking ministers and officials from both sides, the meeting began shortly after President Assad arrived unexpectedly in Cairo on Sunday (July 9) from a round of talks in the Soviet Union.

    In their first session the Arab leaders spent four hours discussing the results of President Assad's visit to Moscow. The talks were expected to continue the next day. The authoritative newspaper Al Ahram reported that President Assad had extended his Soviet trip by a day to meet the Communist party leader M. Leonid Brezhnev.
