Background: Niger has celebrated the thirteenth anniversary of its independence.

The occasion was marked on Saturday (18 December) by a parade of military units and representatives of various community organisations.

After the parade, President Hamani Diori and his party drove to Niamey airport where he opened a new airport terminal which will cater for about 350-thousand passengers a year.

SYNOPSIS: A huge parade in Niamey on Saturday marked the thirteenth anniversary of Niger's independence. War veterans took part in the parade--each wearing a ceremonial uniform.

Watching were ministers of state and President Hamani Diori and his wife.

Units of Niger's present-day army also took part in the parade. To mark the anniversary, President Diori issued a message to the nation in which he outlined the three points which he sees as most important to national development. These are national unity, an improved standard of living--and economic independence.

Following the military sections of the parade--representatives of various community and national organisations..and the jubilant citizens of Niamey.

Sporting events were staged specially to mark the anniversary. Camel racing proved popular--at least from the spectators' point of view.

Later--the opening of a new terminal at Niamey Airport. Performing the ceremony was the President--and special guest of honour was M. San Marco, president of the African and Madagascar Aviation Agency (ASECNA). The new airport terminal will give Niamey Airport a capacity of 350-thousand passengers a year--ten times its previous capacity.
