  • Description

A CROWDED HOLIDAY EXPRESS RAMMED A STATIONARY TRAIN NEAR CHAMPAGNOLE, IN EASTERN FRANCE TODAY (SATURDAY), KILLING AT LEAST 12 PEOPLE - SEVEN OF THEM CHILDREN. ALL THE DEAD WERE IN THE LOMBARDY EXPRESS, STRUCK FROM BEHIND BY THE MILAN-PARIS SLEEPER AS IT STOOD IN THE VILLAGE STATION OF PONT DHERY. THIRTY-THREE PEOPLE WERE INJURED, SEVERAL OF THEM SERIOUSLY.

THE DEAD WERE TAKEN FROM THE TWISTED WRECKAGE OF THE REAR CARRIAGE OF THE STATIONARY TRAIN, PARTLY TELESCOPED BY THE FORCE OF THE SMASH. POLICE SAID ALL THE DEAD WERE FRENCH OR ITALIAN.

THE CRASH OCCURRED JUST BEFORE DAWN. BOTH TRAINS WERE PARIS-BOUND FROM MILAN. POLICE SAID THE LOMBARDY EXPRESS HAD MADE AN UNSCHEDULED STOP AT THE VILLAGE STATION TO CHECK SUSPECTED BRAKE TROUBLE WHEN THE OTHER TRAIN PLOUGHED INTO IT AT ABOUT 20 KILOMETRES (ABOUT 12 MILES) AN HOUR.

THE REAR COACH OF THE LOMBARDY EXPRESS WAS FLUNG ON TO ITS SIDE. THE NOISE OF THE CRASH BROUGHT VILLAGERS RUNNING TO THE RAILWAY LINE. THE BATTERED REAR COACH OF THE LOMBARDY EXPRESS WAS COUPLED ONTO THE TRAIN AT MILAN AT THE LAST MOMENT BECAUSE OF THE LARGE NUMBER OF TOURISTS WHO WANTED TO GET ABOARD. IT WAS HOOKED ON BEHIND THE MAIL COACH WHICH WOULD NORMALLY HAVE TRAVELLED AT THE REAR.

THE ENGINE OF THE MILAN PARIS SLEEPER WAS THROWN ONTO ITS SIDE. THE DRIVER OF THE TRAIN AND HIS MATE WERE THROWN FROM THEIR CAB, BUT WERE NOT SERIOUSLY HURT.
