  • Description

More than a hundred Asians waiting for entry vouchers to Britain gathered outside the British High Commission Passport Office in Nairobi, Kenya, yesterday (November 11) while a delegation discussed their problems with High Commission officials.

A spokesman said all the British Asians in the demonstration had applied for entry vouchers between six months and two years ago. The spokesman, Mr. Harun Devani, a 25-year-old unemployed clerk, said there would be no similar demonstrations until the new Immigration Bill has been discussed in the British Parliament. He hoped for a result early next month.

British officials told the demonstrators that the 1,500 entry vouchers for this year had already been allocated. They advised those waiting to have patience. But many of the Asians are in a difficult plight because, as British citizens, they cannot get permits to work in Kenya. As a result many are destitute.

    The demonstration was peaceful.
