Background: Sir Winston Churchill and Lady Churchill left their Hyde Park Gate, London, UK, home Dec 23 to spend Christmas at "Chartwell", their country residence in Kent. Except for two visits to his doctors in Harley Street, London, it was Sir Winston's first trip out of the house since he broke a bone in his back five weeks ago.
Before they went, however, officials of the American Broadcasting Company called to present Sir Winston with the first four completed episodes of "The Valiant Years", the television series based on his memoirs.
Sir Winston left smoking an enormous cigar ... and with him went Toby, his pet budgerigar. His poodle, Rufus, had been taken to "Chartwell" a little earlier.
Though other members of the Churchill family are expected to be at "Chartwell", Sir Winston's secretary said that because of his illness, his stay in the country would be fairly quiet. Sir Winston was 86 on November 30.
