  • Description

Henry Duvillard of France scored an upset win in the slalom on sunday (16 February) in the Montreal section of the Benson and Hedges professional ski tour.

His victory completed an unhappy two days of competition for the current tour leader, Hank Kashiwa of the United States, who as beaten in the giant slalom the day before.

Duvillard picked up 4,000 dollars (GBP1,700 sterling) for his win-which reversed the placings in a earlier race du;ring the day.

Several dozen skiers, including some of the course by simply taking suburban trains and buses-in contrast to the usual trek to out-of-the way slopes.

Third in the slalom was Doug Woodcock, 23, the local hero, who beat Austria's Harald Rofner in the second consolation race after also losing to the same man earlier on. Coupled with his third place in the giant slalom, this took Woodcock from 11th to 7th in the tour standings.

Professional skiing is still very much a novelty in Canada, which has a very strong amateur skiing fraternity.
