  • Description

MAJOR YURI GAGARIN, THE FIRST SOVIET SPACEMAN, ARRIVED IN TOKYO BY AIR MAY 21 FOR A NINE-DAY VISIT TO JAPAN AT THE INVITATION OF THE JAPAN-SOVIET SOCIETY. HE WAS ACCOMPANIED BY HIS WIFE. ABOUT 2,000 POLICEMEN WERE CALLED OUT TO PATROL THE AIRPORT AND STREETS INTO THE CAPITAL TO FORESTALL ANY POSSIBLE ACTION BY MEMBERS OF THE RIGHT-WING GREATER JAPAN PATRIOTIC PARTY.

MEMBERS OF LEFT-WING GROUPS IN JAPAN TURNED OUT IN FORCE AT THE AIRPORT TO GREET MAJOR GAGARIN AND HIS WIFE - AND ALMOST DROWNED THE SMALL BUT OUTSPOKEN RIGHT-WINGERS. THE SOVIET VISITORS IGNORED THE ANTI-RUSSIAN AND OCCASIONAL SHOUTS OF "GAGARIN GO HOME".

THE LEFT-WING GROUPS COUNTERED WITH HUNDREDS OF LARGE RED FLAGS. THE UNPERTURBED MAJOR TOLD THE CROWD AT THE AIRPORT - VARIOUSLY ESTIMATED AT BETWEEN 7,000 AND 10,000 - THAT EITHER THE SOVIET UNION OR THE UNITED STATES WILL LAND A MAN ON THE MOON IN LESS THAN FOUR YEARS.

THEN FOLLOWED A DRIVE IN OPEN CARS INTO THE CENTRE OF TOKYO. LATER IN THE DAY, THE GAGARINS CALLED ON THE JAPANESE PRIME MINISTER, MR. IKEDA, FOR A FORMAL VISIT. AMONG THOSE PRESENT WAS THE SOVIET AMBASSADOR IN TOKYO.
