  • Description

A VISNEWS CAMERAMAN TODAY (WEDNESDAY) VISITED BRITAIN'S ROYAL AIRCRAFT ESTABLISHMENT AT FARNBOROUGH TO INSPECT THE DEVELOPMENT OF PERSONAL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT FOR AIRCREWS.IN THE HUMAN ENGINEERING DIVISION HE SAW A "FULL PRESSURE SUIT" BEING USED AND WATCHED PRESSURE GARMENTS AND EQUIPMENT UNDERGOING TESTS.

A FULL PRESSURE SUIT APPLIES A UNIFORM PRESSURE OVER THE WHOLE OF THE BODY, INCLUDING HEAD, HANDS AND FEET.TO REMAIN AT ALTITUDES MUCH ABOVE 25,000 FEET FOR HOURS AT A STRETCH HE'S PROVIDED WITH BREATHING OXYGEN AND A PRESSURE CABIN.WITHOUT A CABIN, OR AFTER FAILURE OF A CABIN, HE MUST HAVE A FULL PRESSURE SUIT TO REMAIN AT ALTITUDE.

AIRCREWS AND THEIR PERSONAL EQUIPMENT ARE SOMETIMES SUBJECTED TO VIOLENT REDUCTIONS IN PRESSURE DURING EMERGENCY ESCAPE OR IF THE CABIN IS PUNCTURES AT HIGH ALTITUDE.PRESSURE GARMENTS AND EQUIPMENT MUST THEREFORE BE TESTED THEY'RE NOT DAMAGED AND THAT THEY GIVE REQUIRED PRESSURE PROTECTION.SPECIAL HIGH ALTITUDE CHAMBERS AND PLANT ARE USED FOR THESE TESTS.

ALSO ON FILM IS A DEMONSTRATION UNDERWATER ESCAPE FROM AIRCRAFT.JETTISONING THE CANOPY UNDERWATER, USING THE AIRCRAFT OXYGEN SYSTEM UNDERWATER AND ASCENT TO THE SURFACE ARE EXAMPLES OF SOME OF THE PROBLEMS WHICH HAVE TO BE SOLVED.IT'S CONSIDERED THAT 100 FEET IS THE MAXIMUM DEPTH FROM WHICH AIRCREW CAN HOPE TO ESCAPE.BELOW THIS DEPTH A MAN WITH AN INFLATED LIFESAVING WAISTCOAT IS NEGATIVELY BUOYANT.

A MODERN AIRCRAFT WOULD BE DOWN TO 100 FEET IN 20 SECONDS AND GIVES A MAN VERY LITTLE TIME TO CARRY OUT HIS ESCAPE DRILL.A METHOD OF ESCAPE SIMILAR TO EJECTION IN THE AIR TO PUSH THE MAN OUT OF THE COCKPIT AND TAKE HIM TO THE SURFACE SAFELY AND SPEEDILY IS NECESSARY.THE HUMAN ENGINEERING DIVISION AND THE INSTITUTE OF AVIATION HAVE BEEN TESTING AND ADVISING ON SUCH ESCAPE SYSTEMS.
