The American Secretary of State, Dr. Henry Kissinger, arrived in Algiers on Monday evening (29th April) on the first leg of his fifth Middle East peacemaking tour.
Accompanied by Mrs. Kissinger, the American statesman went straight to the VIP lounge at Algiers airport with the Algerian Minister of State, Mr. Belkacem. Later Dr. Kissinger met President Houari Boumedienne at the People's Palace.
Dr. Kissinger spent eighteen hours in the Algerian capital - five of them in talks with President Boumedienne. He was expected to brief the Algerian leader on his discussions in Goneva with the Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyke.
The American Secretary of State left Algiers on Tuesday (30th April) for Cairo. Before his departure, he said President Boumedienne had "showed understanding and support" for the U.S. effort to bring peace to the Middle East. The two leaders talked about the main issue concerning Dr. Kissinger on this tour - the disengagement of Syrian nd Israeli forces.
Dr. Kissinger said relations between the United States and Algeria had been extensively reviewed.
