Background: Two brigades of the Khmer Republic's crack Seventh Division attacked communist positions on Highway Thirty. south-east of Phnom Penh, on Saturday (May 5). They called in United States air support, but failed in their continuing attempt to re-open the Highway. It was cut by communist forces, the heaviest concentration around the beleaguered Khmer capital, three weeks previously.

On other battle-fronts in Khmer during the weekend a convoy of ten vessels with vital food and fuel for Phnom Penh was held up on the Mekong River on Sunday (May 6). but trucks carrying supplies from the western seaport of Kompong Som got through to the embattled city by road.

At the besieged provincial capital of Tram Khnar, 124 miles (40 kms) south of Phnom Penh, military sources reported heavy communist shelling. The position was swill critical, with government troops holding out in enclaves round the deserted town's northern edge.
