  • Description

Mexican president Luis Echeverria arrived in Bonn, West Germany on Wednesday (6 February), the second stop on a 16-day tour of four European countries. He was greeted by West German President Dr. Gustav Heinemann and was accorded full military honours in an airport ceremony.

President Echeverria arrived from Austria where he took part in a rather unique summit conference that examined the world's chances of survival and what humanity would do to save itself. The informal meeting sponsored by the "Club of Rumo", an influential group of intellectuals and businessmen concerned with the world's futures, was attended by two presidents and four prime ministers.

President Echeverria's visit to West Germany, however, was part of his campaign to rally support for an international charter of economic rights and duties, presented by Mexico to the United Nations at the Conference on Trade and Development (UNTAD) in Chile during 1972.

Following his talks in West Germany, the Mexican leader was to fly on to Italy and Yugoslavia before returning home in mid-February.
