  • Description

ENGLAND, IN FINAL PREPARATIONS TO DEFEND THEIR WORLD CHAMPIONS TITLE, HAD TO FIGHT HARD TO DRAW NIL-ALL WITH HOLLAND AT WEMBLEY STADIUM IN LONDON TONIGHT (WEDNESDAY). ENGLAND'S GOAL KEEPER GORDON BANKS WAS THE ONLY REASON WHY THE VISITORS DIDN'T WIN THE MATCH.

BANKS TWICE SAVE ALMOST CERTAIN GOALS. IN THE TENTH MINUTE OF THE MATCH HOLLAND'S WINGER PIET KEIZER SENT NA INSWINGING FREE KICK FROM 25 YARDS WHICH SEEMED DESTINED FOR THE BACK OF THE NET. HOWEVER, BANKS, DIVING, FINGERTIPPED THE BALL OVER THE TOP. LATER ON BANKS CAME TO ENGLAND'S RESCUE AGAIN WHEN HE THREW HIMSELF AT THE FEET OF DUTCH STRIKER, JOHAN CRYUFF TO SAVE AN APPARENTLY CERTAIN GOAL.

IT WAS THE FIRST TIME HOLLAND HAD APPEARED AT WEMBLEY... AND THEIR PERFORMANCE WAS TOP CLASS. THEY REPEATEDLY SPLIT THE ENGLISH DEFENCE AND THEIR DEFENCE WAS SOLID. IN CONTRAST TO THE HARD WORK GIVEN BANKS, THE DUTCH GOALKEEPER JAN VAN BEVEREN WAS GIVEN AN EASY TIME.

ENGLAND FOUND THE NET ONCE WHEN WINGER IAN MOORE, MAKING HIS INTERNATIONAL DEBUT, HEADED THE BALL PAST VAN BEVERAEN, BUT THE GOAL WAS DISALLOWED FOR OFF-SIDE.
