Background: Less than two years after the massacre at Munich airport during the Olympic Games, the city is preparing to stage its second major world sporting event. During the weekend the finalists for the World Soccer Cup will play off for the top four places. Munich is packed for the finals and the games will be seen by television viewers throughout the world.

However, outwardly at least, there are few signs that security in Munich has been increased to any great extent. Unlike Frankfurt where thousands of police and troops were called out to guard the matches, Munich is taking security without a great deal of show. Two thousand extra men have been called into the city. There are more police cars than normal on the roads, but to counter any attacks by terrorists such as in 1972, special forces have been set up as opposed to massive police blankets.

Elsewhere in Munich there isn't the same blatant enthusiasm shown during the Olympic Games. The decorations are there but they're more subtle than two years ago.

Security at Munich airport has been stepped up. Extra police are in the terminal and armoured cars patrol the perimeter. The expected visit by American Secretary of State Doctor Kissinger to see the World Cup matches has probably caused more security than was originally planned.

In 1972 the massacre at Munich airport overshadowed the Olympic Games. Security at the airport has been increased since then and even more so this week when it was announced American Secretary of State, Doctor Kissinger, would be in Munich to watch the football finals.

There's nothing blatant bout the new security in Munich. Special commando units have been established to counter would-be terrorists. overall the city hasn't gone mad about the finals. Most people still remember the massacre all too well. An extra two thousand policemen will e in the city throughout the finals and its hoped they will dissuade any terrorists.
