  • Description

King Hussein of Jordan arrived in Morocco on Sunday (15 April) for a private visit with his American-born wife Noor Al-Hussein. A spokesman said the couple arrived in Rabat after a skiing holiday in the Austrian Alps.

SYNOPSIS: One of the King Hussein's first duties was to inspect the Guard of Honour, when he visited the Mausoleum housing the tomb of Moroccan King Mohamed the Fifth.

Inside the tomb and his party prayed. King Hussein's visit coincided with the end of a four-day visit by President Mobutu Sese Seko of Zaire.

Officials said that King Hussein was expected to confer with Morocco's King Hassan on Middle East developments following the signing of the Egyptian-Israeli Peace Treaty.

King Hussein and King Hassan met for private talks. Their two countries were among the nineteen Arab states which decided last month to impose economic and political sanctions on Egypt.

Morocco has suffered a series of strikes recently and King Hassan was heavily criticised when the Shah of Iran sought refuge there. One slogan read "Teheran - Rabat: the same fight!" Opponents accuse him of an "extravagant life-style" and condemn what they call the "corruption and lassitude" of Moroccan officials. Lately King Hassan has been seeking closer co-operation with France, as well as other Arab countries.
