  • Description

FORTY-SEVEN CHILDREN WERE INJURED, TWELVE OF THEM SERIOUSLY, WHEN A HAND-GRENADE CARRIED BY AN 11-YEAR-OLD SCHOOLBOY EXPLODED TODAY (WEDNESDAY) AMID A GROUP OF CHILDREN AT A SCHOOL AT HANAU, NEAR WIESBADEN, WEST GERMANY.

AMONG THE SERIOUSLY INJURED, AGED 10 AND 11, IS RUDOLF POSPIECH, THE BOY WHO FOUND THE GRENADE ON THE ROADSIDE AND TOOK IT TO SCHOOL TO SHOW HIS FRIENDS. HIS RIGHT ARM HAS HAD TO BE AMPUTATED, WHILE TWO OTHER CHILDREN HAVE LOST AN EYE EACH. OTHERS WERE OPERATED ON TO REMOVE METAL FRAGMENTS FROM THE BODY AND - IN ONE CASE - FROM THE HEART.

ABOUT HALF WERE SENT HOME AFTER TREATMENT IN HOSPITAL. EXPLOSIVE EXPERTS ARE INVESTIGATING WHETHER THE WEAPON WAS OF GERMAN OR AMERICAN ORIGIN. TOMORROW (THURSDAY) AN EXPERT FROM THE AMERICAN COUNTER-INTELLIGENCE CORPS IS TO BRING SAMPLES OF GRENADES AND OTHER WEAPONS TO THE SCHOOL FOR IDENTIFICATION.

WITHIN MINUTES OF THE DISASTER, AMBULANCES WERE RUSHING THE INJURED TO NEARBY HOSPITALS. AMERICAN MILITARY POLICE FROM THE U.S. ARMY BARRACKS NEAR THE SCHOOL PROVIDED A GUARD FOR THE PLAYGROUND. THE REMAINS OF THE GRENADE WERE COVERED BY A LARGE CARDBOARD BOX. THE EXPLOSION LEFT A CRATER IN THE PLAYGROUND, BUT DID NOT BREAK ANY WINDOWS NEARBY.

LATER A SPOKESMAN FOR THE SCHOOL SAID THAT NONE OF THE CHILDREN WERE CRITICALLY HURT.
