  • Description

The Egyptian War Minister, General Mohammed Abdel Ghani-Gamassi paid a visit to the former occupied Abu Rudeis oilfields in Sinai and warned that other occupied areas of Sinai would be "liberated .. by war or peace".

The oilfields were occupied by Israel after the 1967 war and were formally returned to the Egyptians earlier this month ... more than eight after their capture by Israel.

General Ghani-Gamassi inspected the oilfields accompanied by other Egyptian ministers and promised the inhabitants that reconstruction work would start next year.

The Egyptian Petroleum Minister, Mr. Ahned Ezzeddin Hilal, had earlier asked that Israel may more than 2,000 million dollars (about 1,000 million pounds sterling) in compensation for what he claimed was "Israel's exploitation of the oilfields during the eight year occupation".

The Minister said the recovery of the oilfields would mean that Egypt would now "take its rightful place as an oil exporting nation". Mr.Hilal said the oilfields could produce more than 75,000 barrels of crude petroleum a day.
