Background: An Australian and his 20-year-old Chinese fiancee sailed from Penang on Wednesday for Australia -- a voyage of 7,000 miles (11,265 kilometres -- in a 27-foot (8 metre) sampan. The couple are Chester Harris, aged 19 of Sydney, and Maureen Liew, of Singapore.
The couple plan to hug the coast to Singapore, where Maureen hopes to have a reunion with her parents before they set off for Australia, sailing via Sabah, the Philippines and New Guinea.
Mr Harris, who describes himself as traveller, said he met his fiancee at a dance in Singapore last year. "We became very close friends and were engaged recently," he added.
The sampan, called "Calathumpian", was built at Penang and cost GBP176 Sterling. It is equipped with a sail and an outboard motor.
