  • Description

Police in St. Mary's, suburb 30 miles (50 kms) west of Sydney, finally subdued a gunman on Wednesday (19 August) after an eight-hour siege during which the man, armed with a rifle, pumped about 50 shots at policemen surrounding a bungalow.

The incident began when police went to the men's bungalow following a telephone call. When police spoke to the man's wife in the street he started shooting from a window. The police evacuated four children from the house after the man, aged about 40, told them to get out.

Finally, in an effort to smoke the man out, police fired tear gas into the house. The gas forced the gunman to attempt an escape, and a detective on the roof of the bungalow tried to catch him as he raced out of the house.

The man dropped his rifle but raced away in the attempted escape. He was tackled by detectives and taken away for questioning.

After the gas had been fired a small fire started in the house, but was quickly extinguished by the fire brigade.
