    DAMAGE ESTIMATED AT $ 1-MILLION WAS CAUSED WHEN FIRE GUTTED THE PRESIDENT HOTEL AT LONG BEACH, LONG ISLAND, ON TUESDAY. A WOMAN AGED 65 WAS KILLED IN THE BLAZE WHICH DESTROYED THE FIVE UPPER FLOORS OF THE SEVEN-STOREY HOTEL.

    THE HOTEL, A SUMMERTIME RESORT, HAS 200 ROOMS.

    FLEEING GUESTS LEFT THOUSAND DOLLARS WORTH OF THEIR BELONGINGS IN THE HOTEL.

    FIREMEN USED EXTENSION LADDERS 200 FEET LONG TO RESCUE EIGHTY PEOPLE TRAPPED BY THE FIRE IN THE UPPER FLOORS OF THE HOTEL. ONE GROUP OF THE PEOPLE WERE PLUCKED TO SAFETY WHILE STANDING ON A NARROW PARAPET MORE THAN SIXTY FEET ABOVE THE PAVEMENT.

    MORE THAN 450 FIREMEN FOUGHT THE BLAZE. THE FIRE IS BELIEVED TO HAVE STARTED IN A BASEMENT WHEN A HEATER EXPLODED. IT WAS DRAWN TO THE UPPER FLOORS UP THE ELEVATOR SHAFT.

    IT TOOK MORE THAN FOUR HOURS TO BRING THE BLAZE UNDER CONTROL.

    AT ONE STAGE SMOKE FROM THE BURNING BUILDING WAS CLEARLY VISIBLE FIFTEEN MILES AWAY.
