Prime Minister Jalloud -- on the left -- arrived in Damascus on Friday (23 July) and immediately went into talks with President Assad. A statement issued later said the two men discussed mediation efforts in the Lebanon, where civil war has been raging for the past fifteen months. On Saturday, (24 July), the war produced its biggest single tragedy yet--the probable death of several hundred people, mostly women and children, in a Palestinian refugee camp in Beirut. The roof of their bomb shelter collapsed, following prolonged artillery shelling by right-wing forces. Palestinian Liberation Organisation officials later joined President Assad and Premier Jalloud in their talks. Syria's Foreign Minister, Abdel Halim Khaddam, also met the PLO men for further discussions.
