Background: The thirty-third session of the United Nations General Assembly opened on Tuesday (19 September).

SYNOPSIS: Outgoing President, Lazar Mojsov, opened the session.

Mr. Mojsov, of Yugoslavia, then introduced his successor, from Colombia, in the Latin American group of states, whose turn it was this year to nominate a candidate.

The new President was greeted first by Mr. Mojsov, and then by the Secretary General, Dr Kurt Waldheim. In his speech following his election, Senor Lievano stressed the need to work towards a more equitable international economic order. He then introduced the new members, the delegation from the Solomon Islands.

The Solomon Islands was a British Protectorate until its independence last July. Its delegation was led by Prime Minister Kenilorea and Foreign Secretary, Francis Bugotu. The Solomon islands have a population of fewer than two hundred thousand. Prime Minister Kenilorea thanked the Assembly for their warm welcome, and said his nation accepted the obligations of the United Nations Charter.
