  • Description

Days of heavy rain have flooded the port of Djibouti in the Territory of Afars and Issas.

The rain -- well above the city's annual yearly average -- has come at a time when concern was growing about a possible shortage of water during the hot, dry months from April to September.

The rain was brought by the same weather pattern that has caused serious flooding in north-east of neighbouring Ethiopia, which until now have been in the grip of drought. Cotton crops in Ethiopia's Awash Valley have been ruined and hundreds of people have been stranded by the floods.

The worst-affected parts of Djibouti have been the outlying rural areas, which in places are under several feet of water. In the city itself, hundreds of people have moved out their homes and most of the streets are under water.

The floodwater were expected to recede slowly because of the flatness of the land, and the poor drainage.
