  • Description

Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir addressed an extraordinary session of the Knesset (Parliament) on Wednesday (23 August) and called on all freedom loving people to protest against taxes the Soviet Union was imposing on educated Soviet Jews wishing to emigrate to Israel.

The special session of the Knesset had been called during the summer recess to discuss the new Soviet regulations commanding exit taxes from Jews with higher education qualifications.

Mrs. Meir said that according to information in Jerusalem, the Soviet Government was about to impose penalties on high school and technical school students as well.

She said that the taxes imposed ranged form four-thousand roubles (two-thousand pounds sterling) for a graduate of a cooperative institute to twenty-thousand roubles (ten-thousand pounds sterling) for a Jew holding a Doctor of Science degree.

Mrs. Meir charged that the taxes were part of an anti-jewish campaign aimed at intimidating Jews and deterring them form applying for exit visas.

Following Mrs. Meir's speech a resolution was approved by the emergency session calling on the Soviet Union to drop the taxes which were called reminiscent of the anti-semitic regulations of Tsarist Russia.
