  • Description

An estimated five-thousand people demonstrated through the streets of Chicago in a torch-light parade during the night of December 3rd-4th protesting against United States refusal to grant political asylum to a Lithuanian sailor on November 23rd.

The sailor, identified only as Simas, was a radio operator aboard a Russian fishing vessel which was stopped by a U.S. Coast Guard cutter off the coast of Massachussetts. While the Coast Guard checked the Soviet's rights to fish in the area, Simas jumped to the deck of the U.S. cutter, demanding political asylum. He was kept on board for ten hours, but eventually Russian officers were allowed on board and Simas was dragged back to the fishing vessel, shouting for help.

It has been announced that President Nixon himself is outraged by the incident and that he has ordered a complete investigation into the matter - which could lead to a Court Martial of the three Coast Guard officers involved in the incident. The Voice of America has also repeatedly broadcast news of the incident, accentuating U.S. abhorrence of what occurred and reasserting the Government's policy of welcoming political refugees.

The Chicago demonstration, spearheaded by Lithuanian immigrants and their descendants, ended in a mass rally outside Chicago's Federal Building.
