The event was held at the Herne Hill Stadium in London on Good Friday (28 March).

Two of Europe's best sprinters, Daniel Morelon of France and Jurgen Geschke of East Germany, were among the competitors in the race over one thousand metres.

Nicholson completed the distance in a time of two minutes and four seconds to win first prize of fifteen pounds (27 Australian dollars).

Professional riders were competing against amateurs for the first time at the meeting, which was sponsored by the Southern Countries Cycling Union. It was Britain's biggest single day meeting and more than fifty cyclists took part.

Another big event on the programme was the ten-lap Pro-Am scratch race, which was won by Niels Fredborg of Denmark. He won six pounds (eleven Australian dollars).
