    The fostering of international harmony is the lofty aim of the new Harry S. Truman Research Institute on the Mount Scopus Campus of the Hebrew University. It was inaugurated on Sunday (May 24) with a week-long International Conference on Technical Assistance and Development Aid, Israel's Prime Minister Golda Meir addressed the opening session.

    The new Institute was built as an expression of gratitude from the Jewish people to Mr. Harry S. Truman, thirty-second President of the United States, who was responsible for his country's support of Israel before its establishment. The United States was also the first on any to grant the State of Israel recognition after the proclamation of independence. The funds required for establishing the Institute were provided by Friends of the Hebrew University in the United States and other parts of the world.

    Fifty development experts form more than 20 countries will attend the Technical Assistance Conference, opened by Professor J. Stone, Academic Director of the Truman Centre.

    Mr. Gurung of Nepal spoke on behalf of the participants, who were to spend the next week dealing with problems in international agriculture, education and health. Mrs Meir then spoke on behalf of the Israel Government and people.

    The Institute will study a wide range of subjects, including International Law, Conflict Resolution, Environmental Sciences, and the Economics of Modernisation and Growth. It has a special interest in Peace Research, and in issues concerning the medium and small states, especially the 'developing nations'.

    The following countries, in addition to Israel, were represented at the Institute's opening Conference.

    BELGIUM, BRAZIL, CHILE, DENMARK, FRANCE, GAMBIA, GHANA, MALAGASY, NEPAL, SWEDEN, SWITZERLAND, THAILAND, UGANDA, UNITED KINGDOM, URUGUAY, UNITED STATES, VENEZUELA, AND ZAMBIA.
