Background: Seventeen people, including four Americans, were killed aboard an Iranian Air Force jumbo jet, which exploded in flight and crashed near Huete in Central Spain on Sunday (9 May).

Eyewitnesses said one of the aircraft engines was on fire as it flew over Huete and shortly afterwards they heard a loud explosion. Official reports say the cause of the explosion is not yet known and the crash is being investigated.

The other victims were mainly Iranian military men who were on their way to the United States for training. Two of their wives were also among the dead.

The aircraft had been due to stay over night at Madrid's Barajas civil airport, and it was flying from Teheran to Texas, carrying used spare parts to be replaced with new ones.

It is the second fatal accident involving a Boeing jumbo. In November 1974, 59 people were killed when a civilian 747 crashed after take-off at Nairobi airport.

In Sunday's crash, wreckage was scattered over a large area -- the tail section was about half a mile (1 kilometre) away from the fuselage. Among the debris, there was a Royal Iranian Air Force jacket and several badly dented metal cases.
