  • Description

A 167-TON STONE RAIN GOD HAS BEEN MOVED INTO A NEW HOME IN MEXICO CITY DESPITE THE HOSTILITY OF THE VILLAGERS FROM WHOM IT WAS TAKEN AND THE MAMMOTH PROBLEMS OF MOVING IT.

THE MONOLITH, NAMED AFTER THE RAIN GOD TLALOC (TLAH-LOCK), HAS STOOD FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS IN A DRY GULLY NEAR TEXCOCO, A VILLAGE 40 MILES (65 KMS) FROM MEXICO CITY.

LAST YEAR, THE AUTHORITIES DECIDED TO REMOVE IT TO THE MEXICAN CAPITAL TO BE PLACED IN A PARK ALONGSIDE A NEW ANTHROPOLOGICAL MUSEUM. MOVING IT TO THE CAPITAL, HOWEVER, PRESENTED SOME HEADACHES.

THE PLANNING TOOK SIX MONTHS. FIRST, A SPECIAL ROAD HAD TO BE BUILT TO THE GULLY. THE BRIDGES ALONG THE ROAD TO MEXICO CITY HAD TO BE STRENGTHEN AND POWER LINES RAISED.

THAT DONE, THE OPERATION BEGAN. THE GIANT GOD WAS CARRIED ON A SPECIALLY-BUILT, 72-WHEEL TRAILER, ALTERNATELY PUSHED AND PULLED BY FOUR DIESEL TRACTORS, EACH WEIGHTED WITH TEN TONS OF LEAD TO GIVE THEM TRACTION.

ALL TRAFFIC WAS HALTED SINCE THE IDOL SPRAWLED ACROSS BOTH LANES OF THE ROAD TO MEXICO CITY. TWENTY-FOUR HOURS LATER, IT ARRIVED IN THE CITY - SAFE AND SOUND.

AS COMPENSATION FOR THE ANGRY VILLAGERS, THE GOVERNMENT PROMISED THEM A NEW SCHOOL, A DRAINAGE SYSTEM AND STREET IMPROVEMENTS.
