The 1974 British Commonwealth Games will be held in Christchurch New Zealand. The site was chosen at a meeting of General Assembly of the Games Federation on Sunday (July 19) in Edinburgh where 1970 Games are now being staged.
The voting was 36-2 in favour of Christchurch against the challenge of melbourne Australia. Christchurch was unsuccessful in its bid to host the current games and was heavily favoured to win this time.
In other business a Kenyan proposal to delete the word "British" was rejected by a single vote in a secret ballot; and a Nigerian call for Commonwealth countries to refrain from further sporting exchanges with South African was turned down.
