    CONSTRUCTION ON THE WORLD'S BIGGEST OIL TANKER, WHICH WILL WEIGH 276,000 TONS, HAS STARTED IN YOKOHAMA. THE TANKER AND FIVE OTHERS OF SIMILAR SIZE ARE BEING BUILT FOR THE NATIONAL BULK CARRIERS COMPANY OF THE UNITED STATES.

    THE CONTRACT FOR THREE OF THE TANKERS, HAD BEEN GIVEN TO THE ISHIKAWAJIMA SHIPYARD OF YOKOHAMA, WHERE WORK ON THE FIRST TANKER IS BEING DONE. THE OTHER THREE SHIPS WILL BE BUILT IN NAGASAKI BY MITSUBISHI.

    THE CRAFT WILL BE 1,140 FEET (346 METRES) LONG, HAVE A WIDTH OF 174 FEET (53.3 METRES) AND A CAPACITY OF ROUGHLY 8,400,000,000 IMPERIAL GALLONS (380,000 KILO LITRES). THE WORLD'S LARGEST TANKER AT PRESENT, THE 210,000 TON IDEMITSU MARU, WILL HAVE ONLY TWO THIRDS OF THE NEW TANKERS' CARRYING CAPACITY.

    EACH OF THE NEW CRAFT WILL COST ABOUT GBP7,000,000 STERLING. THE TANKER UNDER CONSTRUCTION WILL TAKE ONE YEAR TO COMPLETE AND WILL OPERATE BETWEEN IRAN AND IRELAND. IT IS SO LARGE THAT IT WILL BE COMPLETED IN THREE PARTS OF 90,000 TONS EACH AND ASSEMBLED LATER. TOP SPEED WILL BE 14.6 KNOTS AND THE TWO STEAM TURBINE ENGINES WILL EACH HAVE A MAXIMUM POWER OF 187,000 HORSEPOWER.
