Background: The vampire bat is delicate and shy - but each year in Latin America it kills a million cows. The blood-drinking creature - which populates areas from southern New Mexico to northern Argentina - transmits deadly rabies. In Brazil, alone, it's responsible for the deaths of nine million dollars (3.4 million sterling) worth of cattle.
As part of a war on hunger, scientists at the Denver Wildlife Research Centre have discovered ways to control the killer through two kinds of deadly compounds. Federal officials say they will offer the technology to the Latin American nations that need it. Field testing will start this month in Brazil.
