  • Description

Billowing clouds of dust completely shrouded spectators as twenty-seven riders from eight countries roared around the Hawkstone Park, Shropshire, circuit July 3 when competing for the sixth leg of the Moto-Cross World Championship.

Lack of rain had made this famous course a parched mile and a quarter of violent bumps. The notorious 1-in-1.8 hill -- a feature of this course much respected by riders -- again figured dramatically in an afternoon of two-wheeled excitement.

Derek Rickman, 26 year- old British rider, had stopped on the hill to avoid a fallen Australian rider. Jeff Smith, another British rider, ran over Rickman's outstretched leg and broke it above the ankle. As officials stood in the swirling dust calling for a stretcher, Bill Nilsson of Sweden -- the eventual winner -- came bucking through the choking cloud, unable to see the fallen Rickman, and rode so close to Rickman that many protests were registered that he in fact rode over him.

Mishaps were numerous - sometimes involving six riders. After the first stage, officials yielded to pressure from the riders and ran the second stage over a new course, bypassing the hill.

Points were awarded on aggregate after two runs of eighteen laps each had been completed. Winner of the Hawkstone leg was 26-year old Bill Nilsson of Stockholm, Sweden. He rode brilliantly throughout, despite the adverse conditions. Second was Don Rickman of Great Britain - brother of the injured Derek Rickman. G. Johansson of Sweden finished third.

Previous legs have been held in Austria; France; Sweden and Italy. Three other legs are to be contested before the final winner is decided. Holland; Belgium; and Luxembourg. S. Lundin and Bill Nilsson of Sweden head the points table so far, with 26 points each. Britain's Don Rickman is in third position with 18.
