  • Description

In their second match in as many months, L'ASEC of Abidjan in the Ivory Coast beat their old rivals from Senegal, Jaraaf of Dakar, in a friendly international at the Houphouet-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan on Sunday (25 November).

Approximately 15,000 spectators - mainly ASEC supporters - crowded into the modern stadium to see the Ivory Coast team win a convincing 2 - nil victory. However, many of their supporters did not consider that ASEC were in good form, and they were quick to point out that three of their best players were missing from the side.

Among the spectators was one of the three Ministers of State in the Ivory Coast Government, M. German Koffi Gadeau. He was able to enjoy a remarkably trouble free match. Previously, games between Senegal and Ivory Coast teams have been marked by a disturbing amount of violence on the field, but this time there was nothing to complain of.

The first goal came in the first half when Cheik Fall of Jaraaf touched the ball with his hand in the penalty area while under pressure from an ASEC attack. The resulting penalty kick, in the 36th minute, put ASEC one goal in the lead. It was kicked by Bouazo, who had another shot at goal shortly before the interval and only narrowly missed.

After the interval, Jaraaf went on the attack and the three Senegalese forwards, Babacar Fall, Leopold Diop and N'Doffene Fall tested the Abidjan defence to the maximum.

N'Guessan of ASEC who had played well throughout the match, had his efforts rewarded in the 57th minute, when he put the ball in the back of the net, giving the Ivorians their final goal and a 2- nil victory.

SYNOPSIS: Most of the fifteen thousand spectators who crowded into the Houphouet-Boigny Stadium in the Ivory Coast capital of Abidjan on Sunday, were supporting their local football team, ASEC, playing in the dark shorts left to right. For the second time in two months, they were playing a friendly international against their old opponents, Jaraaf from Dakar in Senegal.

Among the spectators was one of the three Ministers of State in the Ivory Coast Government, Monsieur Germain Koffi Gadeau. He was able to enjoy a remarkably trouble free match. Previous games between Senegalese and Ivory Coast teams have been marked by violence on the field, but on Sunday all the players seemed to be on their best behaviour. During the first half, ASEC were dominant most of the time, although the Senegalese team occasionally mounted an attack. But each time it was beaten back.

The Ivory Coast players kept up the pressure and there were many near misses. The ASEC forwards battered away at the Jaraaf goal area, but the Senegalese defence held firm, with Damba M'Baye stretched to the full in the goal mouth. It is some credit to him that of the two goals he was to let through by the end of the match, one of them was a penalty - hardly a fair chance for any goalkeeper. But this was one that didn't get away.

The fan's demand for goals was met in the thirty-sixth minute, when a foul by a Jaraaf defender gave ASEC a penalty. After the interval only one goal would be added.
