  • Description

The Anglican Dean of Johannesburg, the Very Reverend Gonville French-Beytagh, was released on bail of 5,000 Rands (GBP2,900 sterling) yesterday (Thursday, January 28) when he appeared at Johannesburg Magistrates Court under the Suppression of Communism Act.

The crowded courtroom heard the Dean accused of having dealings with the banned South African Communist Party and the African National Congress. He was not asked to make a plea and the case was adjourned until February 26.

Among those in the public gallery were the Anglican Bishop of Johannesburg, the Right Reverend Leslie Stradling, who formerly served in Tanzania, and an observer from the British Consulate-General.

It was his first appearance in public since he was arrested by security police in his office at St. Mary's Cathedral eight days earlier. he was said to be suffering great mental stress.

The court appearance of the Dean ended a week of protest which included the daily ringing of church and cathedral bells.

The court was told that the Dean had assisted in the distribution of pamphlets calling for guerrilla warfare in Southern Africa. These pamphlets, the prosecution said, included instructions on how to operate and make hand-grenades and Molotov cocktails.
